My work is concerned with the
representation of social and political disruptions and the constitution of
political subjectivities. I am interested in exploring how the above take form in
different contexts, and, furthermore, how they can be renegotiated in an age of
growing mistrust to established institutions and ideologies.



To this end, I use
documentary methods and archives along with symbolic objects and fictional
narratives in order to construct “hegemonic” spaces where different types of
subjectivities, on the one hand, challenge established rules and norms and, on
the other, antagonize each other.

Michailangelos Vlassis-Ziakas (b.1987) is a visual artist based
in Athens, Greece. He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine arts
(2007-2012) and completed his master studies on the domain of museology at
University College London Qatar (UCLQ) in 2015. He participated in various
group exhibitions and biennales in Greece and abroad.

VIDEO INSTALLATIONDOCUMENTARY&#38;nbsp;




Long Covid, becomes a conceptual framework for approaching the prolonged symptoms of a politicised trauma. The exhibition reflects on the pandemic as a moment of rupture, highlighting the unresolved tensions and conflicts between dominant and unofficial narratives. At the same time,&#38;nbsp; the project studies the discursive formations that have gained visibility and traction in the public sphere, most visibly since the 2008 financial crisis, mapping a terrain where ideology, affect, and narrative intertwine.

A multi-channel video installation composed of twenty interviews conducted by the artist with twenty individuals who opposed the COVID-19 vaccination delivers a spectrum of attitudes marked by skepticism toward the institutions of democracy, the state, and science, the work assembles a complex and often contradictory oral archive—an affective and ideological cartography of the pandemic experience. The focus here is not the epidemiological event per se, but the psychological, emotional, and political reverberations it triggered. It is an attempt to trace the internal logics and shifts of these subjects as they move from anti-systemic discourse toward narratives bordering on conspiracy theories.

Expanding on this inquiry, the exhibition also features parts of an ongoing, multimedia archive the artist began compiling between 2020–2022. This parallel body of work reflects a sustained attempt to document and register the ideological fissures and affective dislocations that ruptured—and continue to rupture—the social fabric in the wake of the pandemic.

Through a layered and performative methodology, Long Covid invites us to consider how ideological reconfigurations unfold during times of "permanent crisis"—whether economic, political, institutional, or epidemiological. The exhibition ultimately probes the crisis of meaning itself, as both a condition and a conceptual horizon.

VIDEO INSTALLATIONDOCUMENTARY&#38;nbsp;


Counter (-) approaches the act of Electrical Power Theft using 
the "tools" of documentary. Through a series of videotaped interviews it discusses 
the political dimensions of individual and collective interventions in 
the electricity network as well as the motivations and the nature of 
their application, ranging from an inability to repay bills to a 
conscious ideological attitude and from opportunism to an act of 
solidarity.
 The axes on which this attempt of recording, analysis and approach moves
 are constantly alternating through different presences. The technique 
itself, its transformation into knowledge and&#38;nbsp;its&#38;nbsp;way of dissemination, 
the&#38;nbsp;selection&#38;nbsp;and subjectivity&#38;nbsp;in&#38;nbsp;the colouring&#38;nbsp;of the act, as well as 
the understanding of the respective context co-form a polyphonic 
ensemble.
 The interviewees are asked to cover their faces in any way they wish in a
 process not only of concealing their identity but also of consciously 
representing their socio-political self in the context of the interview. Their
disguises are being elaborated as techniques of self-representation and are
discussed during the interviews along with topics concerning technical, ethical and political
aspects of electricity theft. 
 
&#38;nbsp;Counter (-) does not seek a conventional depiction of the Electrical 
Power Theft phenomenon. Instead, beginning with the mapping of a network
 of actors, it deals with the various ways in which subjects choose to 
make sense of a delinquent act, to form a political and moral discourse 
around it, and to represent themselves in the context defined by the 
interview.

COUNTER(-) -Weasel Dance

PERFORMANCEDOCUMENTARY&#38;nbsp;



Current entry is a performative version of Counter(-), presented as part of the exhibition Weasel Dance: The Mimetic in the Post-Digital Predicament, curated by the collective Most Mechanics Are Crooks (Eva Giannakopoulou, Alexis Fidetzis, Panos Sklavenitis, Kostis Stafylakis).

The performance was inspired by the behaviour and street language of smugglers in Athens, especially the way they approach people at random on the street in order to sell stolen items. Following this idea, performers moved through the event space at the Goethe-Institut, walking among the crowd and approaching visitors. Using tablets and phones, they showed short clips from Counter(-), featuring techniques of electricity theft—such as hacking electric meters or making illegal connections to the power grid.

By bringing this street manner and the content of the videos into the venue, the performers introduced an unexpected and disruptive element into the setting and its audience.

The performance ended with a projection of Counter(-) on the main stage.

NOTES ON A TECHNICAL SYSTEM[2017]

"Notes for a Technical System" is a portrait of the Paros Municipal Committee opposing the installation of wind turbines. It is a documentary video installation regarding the announcement of industrial wind farms development on the island of Paros and the reaction of the local community. 

The portrait captures the concerns of the community about the impact that wind farms are expected to have on the local environment and the island's economy. 

Through the description of various contexts (legal, political, environmental, ideological, etc.) interviewees bring in the foreground aspects of the multifaceted relationship between the European center and peripheries as reflected in the key contemporary issue of climate change.

Mapping Utopia is an interactive online map that proposes a critical exploration of the utopian imaginary as a vehicle for conflict and exclusion. It is a mapping of the Balkans that combines fictional elements with geographical and historical data to create a space where utopian visioning shapes a dystopian geography. 

Images of sociopolitical conflicts, triggered by utopian imaginaries, are combined with the original description of the fictional island of utopia, as depicted by Thomas More in his book Of A Republic’s Best State And Of The New Island Utopia (1516). The combination form an alternative map of the southern Balkan peninsula and eastern Turkey.
&#38;nbsp;
Using ArcGIS software the dimensions of the imaginary island as described by More are applied to a&#38;nbsp;digital map of the Balkan, generating an alternative version&#38;nbsp;of the region based on the fictional narrative. In addition, corresponding to the 54 cities of Utopia, 54 interactive points on the map (clickable) lead to photographic and video documentation of national conflicts, political and social unrest.
The events are classified as historical manifestations of utopian imaginaries in real-world space and are placed on the GIS map at the actual&#38;nbsp;coordinates where they occurred. The images are accompanied by the year of the event, the geographical coordinates of the place, a brief description of the event and a label that classifies each event according to the utopia that activated it [National, Ethnic, Ideological, Religious and (Europe) Fortress]. 
The heterogeneous utopian imaginaries appear as carriers of ruptures and compose the dystopian map of the region.

FOR A REPRESENTATION OF UTOPIA



	[2017]POSTERS


"For a Representation of Utopia" is a complementary work to Mapping Utopia. Like Mapping Utopia, this work is a critical examination of the utopian imaginary as a vehicle for conflict. The work consists of a series of posters created from edited images depicting incidents of political violence from around the world. 

 Each poster includes the image of the event, the year, its geographical coordinates, and the word "utopia", with no additional elements. 

The poster, as a historical propaganda medium, is used in the work in order to bring together images from diverse historical and geographical contexts and form a heterogeneous set of ideological actors unified by the common thread of violence. 

Brief captions accompany the posters providing basic information about the incidents, placing the image in its historical context.
